MELBOURNE GUITAR LAB

In 2016 Lucas Michailidis put together an ensemble of 25 guitarists for a theatre performance. This experience brought about a new idea - a fellowship of guitarists driven by a shared obsession of music.  The Melbourne Guitar Lab was born.

Since then the MGL has aimed to diversify the landscape of music education through intensive programs offered by industry-successful players. The focus being on improving skills, provoking genuine creativity, and fostering a community of musicians. The guitar is a hugely popular instrument, yet passionate players (who are not necessarily professional or formally trained ) are denied access to quality education.  The MGL bridges this gap.

Initially bound to Melbourne Head Quarters,  MGL went global in 2020 when high profile, international players became accessible during the COVID pandemic:  Scott Henderson, Oz Noy, Brett Garsed, James Muller and Michael Dolce.  This in turn resulted in a hugely expanded audience base with participants tuning in from the UK, Italy, India, Brasil, USA and Japan.

“Information and teaching about music and the guitar is everywhere, but it is rare to find a meaningful, practical structure that leads to coherent and sustained learning.  It was especially rewarding to develop a sense of command over areas of music that were previously completely mystifying.

Musically all your workshops have been just mind blowing and I have gained so much that I don’t want to bore you with an essay on everything I have started working on or the pathways I see before me.

This workshop kicked my butt. My ability to navigate harmony has close to doubled. Material to practice for the next couple of decades…

Awesome...so damn inspired...THANK YOU!!!!!

Your willingness to share with the wider jazz community sets you apart as a best practice muso & educator. Sharing ideas is so beneficial. Keep it up. Looking forward to the next time!

a joy listen to - so many gems of information to put to use.

A fantastic fun way to clear through the thick musical scrubs we encounter, guided by masters in a casual, welcoming, inclusive and inspiring masterclass.
