An opportunity to engage first hand with a collection of Australia's finest guitar players - each conducting a 2 hour workshop. Gain insight into their unique approach and access more than 200 years of collective playing experience across all styles:
Rock/Fusion (Garsed,Ryan), Classical (Grigoriyan), Brazilian/ Jazz (deVries), Contemporary Jazz/ Improvisation (Magnusson), Fingerstyle (Michailidis), Blues (Achison, Boyes).
Each session will be divided in two - the first half devoted to live artist demonstrations, discussion and Q & A. The second half will be a practical focus of relevant concepts applied and explored on your own instrument. Participants are encouraged to bring their own instrument to each session.
Since capturing the Classical music scene by storm in 1995 as a major prize winner of the Tokyo International Classical Guitar competition, Grigoryan has since forged an illustrious career both here and abroad. He has performed with numerous orchestras: Israel, BBC, London Philharmonic along with guitar legends: Paco Pena, Leo Kottke and most recently Ralph Towner. As a founding member of Saffire, he has received an Aria award and has been appointed Artistic director of the Adelaide International Guitar Festival for 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016.
Workshop details: Efficient practicing, exercises for technique building, and repertoire memorisation.
Garsed is regarded as one of the foremost fusion players in the world and is renowned for his legato and hybrid picking technique, fluidity and distinctive slide playing. He has worked extensively with John Farnham, recording Whispering Jack the biggest selling album in Australian history. This resulted in sellout tours of Australia and Europe. Garsed has spent fourteen years living in Los Angeles where he worked with players: Frank Gambale, Shawn Lane, Garry Willis, TJ Helmerich, Dennis Chambers and Scott Kinsey. Whilst there, he taught at the Musicians Institute (GIT) in Hollywood.
Workshop details: Legato playing and hybrid picking technique. Infusing lines with wide intervals and chromactic passing tones.
Doug de Vries is one of Australia's foremost guitarists and a significant composer for the guitar, excelling in many musical genres, from jazz to tango, choro, samba and bossa nova.
He is considered Australia's leading exponent of Brazilian guitar repertoire and recently released a solo album of original works and classic Brazilian repertoire. De Vries is particularly noted for his sophisticated accompaniments, deep knowledge, and daring improvisations whether in solo or group settings.
Workshop details: Brazillian guitar and fingerstyle jazz. The roots of samba, bossa nova and how to accompany and create solo arrangements.
A jaw dropping, guitar virtuoso, Geoff Achison invokes the spirit of the great blues and soul artists to create his original sound. Whether he is with his Souldiggers group or simply solo with an acoustic guitar, Achison's infectious and inventive style has earned him fans around the world. Achison has toured relentlessly across the US, UK and Australia and has won several awards including 'The Abert King Award' which landed him a sponsorship deal with Gibson. In 1998 Geoff made Guitar Player Magazine's '10 Hot New Guitarists list and Truefire's "100 Gifted guitarists You Should Know."
Stephen Magnusson is considered one of Australia’s most accomplished, versatile and distinct musicians with incredible technique and an astoundingly beautiful tone. He has worked with many artists including Charlie Haden, Ricki Lee Jones, Sinead O’Connor, Gurrumul Yunupingu, Paul Grabowsky, Katie Noonan and many others. As a part of the Katie Noonan trio Elixir, the ensemble won the ARIA for Best Jazz Album in 2011.
In 2013, Stephen was awarded the Melbourne Prize for Outstanding Musician, and the Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album with his quartet MAGNET (with Carl Pannuzzo, Eugene Ball and Sergio Beresovsky).
Workshop details: motifs, phrases and riffs- a study in narrative (story telling).

Fiona's music always draws on a myriad of traditional regional styles from pre-war acoustic
ragtime to the classic blues sounds of New Orleans, Chicago and Memphis. Her latest, Box & Dice,
finds her digging deep into her guitar collection, which features 6 & 4 string cigarbox guitars (played either bottle neck style or using miniature whiskey bottles as make-shift slides), and a rare National Reso-lectric electric baritone
The career of Lucas Michailidis spans more than twenty five years. He is a past winner of the International Open Strings Competition in Germany and an ARIA award recipient for his work with Zulya and the Children of the Underground. Lucas has performed in Europe, South Korea, and the USA, and has released three solo recordings that have garnered worldwide acclaim. The latest Laughing at the Thief, is featured on premier US acoustic label - Candyrat and promotional videos accompanying the release have clocked over three hundred thousand views. His acoustic finger style work is characterised by musical lyricism, sophisticated counterpoint and resonant harmonic progressions underpinned by an extensive exploration of alternate tunings.
Workshop details: Composing and arranging for fingerstyle guitar. Employing concepts to generate and ignite creativity.
James has been an in-demand session guitarist, teacher and clinician for more than 20 years. He has toured internationally with Men At Work, and performed with artists Ronan Keating, Olivia Newton John, Shania Twain and more locally with Vanessa Amorosi, Jon Stevens and Kate Ceberano. James has also been part of the “Australia’s Got Talent” and “Dancing With The Stars” bands.
His most recent focus is creating videos for brands such as Seymour Duncan, Tech 21, Fractal Audio and Fender. James is building a strong online presence with over 3 million Youtube views.
Workshop details: Combining alternate and hybrid picking, sweeping and tapping techniques to break new ground. Successful practice and focus concepts.
